Challenges that go viral, is death worth internet hits & likes? #firechallenge #passoutchallenge

I know as you read the title you are asking yourself " how can anyone be so crazy to set themselves on fire"?

This is not fun or funny! This is deadly!

Not only are these kids setting themselves on fire, they are using rubbing alcohol as an accelerant and video taping each other to prove they did the #firechallenge.

This young man actually posted a video after this one showing his burns, and telling others Not to do it......ya think?

I just want to scream right now!

The 2 young ladies in the photo above are being video taped while doing the #passoutchallenge , notice the contorted body of the girl on the ground. Most likely caused by a lack of oxygen to her brain, seizure and probable brain cell death occurring. Nobody offers to help her up or make sure she does not injure herself while flopping around on the ground?? How crazy!

Several challenges are circulating the internet & video airwaves right now that are very dangerous for your children to even think about. Search these hashtags :

#firechallenge

#passoutchallenge

#gtschallenge

#passoutgame

#chokingchallenge

#gotosleepchallenge

#chokinggame

#spacemonkeychallenge or game

Educate yourself, your kids and others about these deadly risk behaviors!

Save a life! Tell others

For more info and education visit http://Ed4Ed4All.com

Also tell social media, esp Facebook to please remove these videos and photos, apparently Facebook does not think that they violate any of their community standards ?? Is this not Self Harm people? YouTube thinks so!

Break these Chains..

Debbie LaRocque started this string of beads in 2006 with the 1st bead being her child's. Each bead represents a child that we know has died from the choking game since then. This string of beads is now over 20 ft long with over 600 beads and these are only the ones that are self-reported.

Today October 11, 2012 marks the first World Choking Game Awareness Day! #SPEAKUP  and shout out the importance and significance of making more people aware of this deadly game that kids are playing!

THESE KIDS ARE DYING! WE CAN STOP THIS
EDUCATE YOURSELF
EDUCATE YOUR KIDS!
EMPOWER YOUR COMMUNITY

10-11-12 the ages you should talk to kids because the average age of death is 13. It is estimated that 75% of kids know about the game but 40% of kids think it's harmless. It is not - just start asking 13 and 14 yr olds if they've heard of a game where kids pass out for fun because it has way too many names among kids to ask just about the choking game..

On 10/11/12, we request that you make the ribbon your profile pic or at least talk to some people about the game.

IT IS going on around you - SPEAK UP

and help keep our children from dying a senseless death.

Thank you to the Kris Marceno Foundation for their award winning PSA -

Part 2: Drinking Hand Sanitizer? Seriously Serious!

Part 2
Today we look into the nasty dangerous game of drinking hand sanitizer to get high!
Yes, kids and teens are actually doing this, and landing their butts in the ER and ICU's intoxicated and barely breathing.
Alcohol is a drug or specifically the drug/chemical ethanol is a central nervous system depressant, thus slowing down the respiratory drive of the drinker, to much and you can stop breathing.
The following article from CBS News shows incidents and possible solutions.

(CBS News) Would you drink hand sanitizer? The idea may sound repulsive to most people, but California doctors are warning parents of what may be a fast-growing dangerous trend after six local teenagers were hospitalized in separate incidents with alcohol poisoning from drinking the soapy stuff.
Popular "cinnamon challenge" has potential to be deadly
Dangerous "games" that may harm kids and teens
The Los Angeles Times reported some of the teenagers used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer using instructions found online. If a liquid hand sanitizer contains 62 percent ethyl alcohol, that means a "drink" can be as high as 120 proof, whereas a shot of hard liquor such as whiskey or vodka is typically 80 proof.

"All it takes is just a few swallows and you have a drunk teenager," Dr. Cyrus Rangan, director of the toxicology bureau for the county public health department and a medical toxicology consultant for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times. "There is no question that it is dangerous."
Teens who presented to the emergency room had symptoms such as slurred speech and a burning sensation in the stomach. Some teens were so drunk they needed to be monitored in the emergency room.
Rangan said although there have been only a handful of cases, the practice could become a nationwide problem since hand sanitizers are cheap and easily available, and teens can easily look up how to extract alcohol from a bottle. KTLA in Los Angeles reports there were no such cases last year, and the recent spate of cases in recent weeks is surprising.
"It is kind of scary that they go to that extent to get a shot of essentially hard liquor," Rangan said.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Department of Health told HealthPop there was no official city-wide warning or statement at this time.
Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said he has taken care of some teens out who had ingested hand sanitizers at school as a "dare," only to come to the ER drunk with dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
"They denied drinking any 'alcohol', had no smell of alcohol on their breath, but when their blood alcohol was quite elevated, they later admitted to drinking the hand sanitizer," Glatter told HealthPop.
Glatter said it's essential that warning labels be placed on hand sanitizers to educate parents and the public of potential risks.
"Officials in institutions where these products are available - including hospitals, schools, offices, heath clubs, and day care centers - have a duty to inform people about the alcohol content in these products, and subsequent dangers if ingested," he told HealthPop.
Doctors told the L.A. Times that parents should purchase foam hand sanitizers since they're harder to extract alcohol from compared with gel-based products, and they should monitor hand sanitizer bottles around the house as if they are liquor or medicine bottles.
"Over the years, they have ingested all sorts of things," Helen Arbogast, injury prevention coordinator in the trauma program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, told the Times. "Cough syrup had reached a very sexy point where young people were using it.... We want to be sure this doesn't take on the same trend."
The industry trade organization, the American Cleaning Institute, responded to the recent reports.
"One case of product misuse - intentional or otherwise - is always one too many," Nancy Bock, vice president of education at the American Cleaning Institute said in an emailed statement. "But let's not lose sight of the fact that millions of people are not abusing these products and do responsibly use them as needed."

Video shows kids laughing about this crazy trend and posting YouTube videos

What next? I am sure there is something out there just as bad, I will find it to share next :) Leslie

More Games we play...........that astound us!

Some of the things that people do for attention just astound me, the newest craze called the "Cinnamon challenge" has hit the air waves and social media sites like You Tube. What is so special about cinnamon? it is yummy on my toast with some sugar in moderation, in my cinnamon latte sprinkled on top it is good too. Why on this green earth would you want to take a huge heaping spoon full of the stuff and cram it in your mouth? Subsequently coughing, spewing and spattering the powder all over yourself (how attractive) making a huge mess, and oh yeah not to mention inhaling it into your lungs. I guess you like to be a brown powdered, coughing, vomiting, wheezing , pneumonia-prone mess and then video tape the entire thing to make yourself look like an absolute fool in front of all your friends and many non-friends who just think you are stupid.
Now we have not even talked about the health hazards of the intake of to much cinnamon.  Cinnamon powder can cause allergic reactions and breathing problems, and if it is ingested it can lead to serious burns. Some of these side effects can lead to life-threatening medical emergencies. Cinnamon powder can lead to a bronchial constriction, which can be life threatening. If you suffer from an underlying medical condition that may cause problems with breathing, you should be very careful when handling cinnamon powder.
Allergic reactions---can you say Anaphylaxis which can = DEAD if not treated fast!!
According to the University of Michigan, an allergic reaction can occur if you have not previously used cinnamon powder. This is especially true for young babies or children that are being introduced to cinnamon for the first time. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, cinnamon can cause an allergic reaction that can even lead to anaphylactic shock, which is a life threatening medical condition. An allergic reaction can also occur on your skin. Sometimes when cinnamon powder gets on the skin it can cause reddening or even a rash.
Burns!
Cinnamon powder can be very dangerous if you accidentally ingest it by mouth. For example, small children who like to play in the cabinets can easily get into the spice cabinet and ingest the cinnamon powder. This can cause severe burning of the mouth and throat and require immediate medical attention. The burning may be so severe that the child can suffer from swelling of the mouth or throat, which can be life threatening.

This article is from CBS News New York:
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A common spice is creating an uncommon problem among teens. It’s called the “cinnamon challenge” and doctors are warning it could be dangerous.

The cinnamon challenge is an old stunt that is making the rounds with a new generation of teens and is popping up all over YouTube and Facebook.

The challenge works like this: A person swallows an entire tablespoon of ground cinnamon without  water, but the results usually end in coughing, choking, gagging, sometimes vomiting and always burning pain.

“It’s dangerous and I never want to have that feeling again,” said one 9th grader, who didn’t want to be identified. She said she was dared to do the challenge last month.

And it’s not just teens who are getting into trouble. New Haven’s Clinton Avenue School principal is on leave, accused of letting  kids in the lunchroom down doses of the spice.

There are no accounts of death by cinnamon, but doctors at Winthrop University Hospital say it’s a dangerous dare. It can raise  blood sugar levels, burn the throat and get into the lungs.
If it gets into your lungs, it can cause asthma or pneumonia,” explained Dr. Joseph Greensher.

Several schools nationwide have formally warned their students about the cinnamon challenge. Doctors say parents should also tell their kids it’s really no joke.

A school in Pennsylvania has actually banned some boots because students were smuggling cinnamon into schools that way.

The video below was on Good Morning America and shows just how crazy ingesting spoonful of cinnamon powder is.
Doctors say the challenge is impossible because the cinnamon cannot be digested without water and warn that by inhaling the cinnamon dust teens run the risk of inflaming or scarring their lungs.

“If you have some fine particles, like cinnamon in your lungs, it may be hard to clear out,” said Dr. Robert Zaid of Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala.  ”Your lungs can kind of collapse on you. There have been several cases reported where kids needed ventilator support because they weren’t able to maintain their airway.”
Dejah Reed, a freshman at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., spent four days in the hospital with an infection and a collapsed right lung after she ingested cinnamon two week ago.

“She was going in and out of consciousness. She couldn’t breathe. She was turning pale,” her father, Fred Reed, told local affiliate WXYZ. “I hope parents and kids learn that it’s not fun and games. She could have died.”

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Even a site devoted to the challenge, Cinnamonchallenge.com, has this disclaimer prominently displayed on its homepage, “DO NOT ATTEMPT THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE WITHOUT TALKING WITH A DOCTOR.  OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE GOING TO TELL YOU NOT TO DO IT. THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE CAN BE DANGEROUS AND SHOULDN’T BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. YOU NEVER WANT TO PURPOSELY OR MISTAKINGLY INHALE ANY SUBSTANCES SUCH AS CINNAMON. IT’S GOING TO BURN, YOU ARE GOING TO COUGH, AND REGRET YOU TRIED…SO WATCH MOVIES OF PEOPLE ALREADY FEELING THE PAIN.”

Despite the serious health risks the game has been popularized by athletes and even a politician.

In November, during the NBA lockout, basketball stars Nick Young and JaVale McGee attempted the cinnamon challenge in a YouTube video that has been viewed more than 100,000 times and posted on ESPN.com.  In February Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn took the challenge while appearing on a talk radio show, though he drank water to get it down.

Boo to you guys, basketball stars and a Governor acting so stupid, thank you for letting down my children and showing them that people in the public eye that are supposed to be responsible and show some kind of smarts at least are just as stupid as the rest of the dummies out there.

Please be smart and don't do something just because its viral on the internet and "everybody else is doing is momma" well if you fall for that old trick, you are just as stupid as they are and you will suffer the consequences also.
Be safe and be smart, show the world that you are #1 , you have a brain, use it!

Are smart kids more likely to use drugs?

Fact Sheet

Are smart kids more likely to use drugs?

An ambitious new study suggests a surprising link between a child's IQ and his use of illegal substances as an adult

Classroom know-it-alls may be more likely to experiment with drugs as they enter adulthood, according to a new study.
Smart kids are more likely to use drugs such as marijuana and cocaine when they grow up — and the likelihood is stronger among females than males — according to a new British study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Researchers have previously posited that children with a high IQ can grow up to be heavier drinkers. Now drugs, too? A concise guide to the findings:

What was the study's methodology?Researchers tracked about 8,000 people across three decades, recording their IQ scores at age 5 and again at age 10, says Makiko Kitamura at Bloomberg Businessweek. As adults, "participants were asked about use of substances including cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms, crack and heroin."

And what did they find?
Subjects "who had high IQs when they were aged 5 and 10 were more likely to use certain illicit drugs at age 16 and at age 30," says Denise Mann at Web MD. In particular, women with high IQ scores at 5 years of age were "more than twice as likely" to have smoked marijuana or tried cocaine by age 30 than women with lower IQs. As for men who tested well as kids, 50 percent were more likely to use amphetamines like speed, 65 percent more likely to have tried ecstasy, and, overall, 57 percent more likely to have used two or more illegal drugs by the time they hit 30.

Why are smart kids more likely to use drugs?
While parents may find the results "surprising at first glance," intelligent children fit the "established" profile of drug experimenters in many ways, says Karen Kaplan at the Los Angeles Times. Among the social factors that can lead individuals to try drugs are boredom and a "tendency to be teased" by peers as a child. (Drugs could be used as a "coping strategy.") Moreover, smarter individuals are typically more willing to try new things. As the researchers note: "High-IQ individuals have also been known to score highly on tests of stimulation seeking and openness to experience" — which illegal drugs can provide.

What do you think?

Ed4Ed's Injury Prevention Program --Update; The 3rd Edition

Welcome to the 3rd Edition of Ed4Ed’s Injury Prevention Program
The release date of this edition has been significantly delayed because the program has undergone substantial BUT beneficial changes. Lyndi and I had an amazing two weeks in April at her home in Alaska: an extremely productive 14 day think tank. Simplicity is the key to making this program work. Lyndi’s Database and technical skills made all the difference and proved the critical component in the new format of the program. Making the program software work harder—and more efficiently for all of us was our objective. I do believe we have made huge strides in that direction. Our Database is now consolidated and efficiently generating reports that drive statistical data. This ensures updates will be released on time, every time. The delay between the last quarter of 2009 updates and the first updates of 2010, regrettably delayed—but I believe the delay was fortunate. Quantum technological leaps were made at our “Alaska Summit”.
The presentation is complete and ready for use in either Adobe Acrobat format, embedded with flash videos or in PowerPoint—published with more reliable links to videos in MP4 format.   A full and complete Printable Manual, a User’s Guide will replace the former printable “Binder”.  A good instruction manual is essential. We are taking care and time to ensure it will finally be the guide that will make use of the program much easier for all. In the interim this document will assist you: a slide by slide review of the presentation and the basic overview of structural changes. Another announcement will be made when the Ed4Ed Manual, A User Guide is complete.

OVERVIEW & Ed4Ed Share File Links
The 3rd Edition’s most significant change is the elimination of duplication. Through improved use of technological features, navigational aids in PowerPoint, there is now only one presentation which does the work of all four of the presentations in the 2nd Edition.  In brief, within the presentation are two navigational slides referred to technically as “Touchstone Slides”. When in active presentation view mode the foot notes at the bottom center of each slide will return the user to the first Touchstone Section Slide. The second “Touchstone Slide” is accessed through the first one using the video link. Using the hyper link navigational features the user can jump to the desired section of the presentation and easily select videos. Again, in an active presentation view, the presenter by using the left footer at the bottom of each slide, by selecting it with a right click of a mouse, will activate a pull down window allowing complete slide by slide navigation, allows the presenter to also switch programs and launch videos, or access any other open program the presenter wishes to use in a customized work. It is no longer necessary to know how to edit and re-design custom slides and create custom presentations, copying and pasting slides from Ed4Ed. Simply switch the view and proceed. Planning and selecting sections and individual slides is made easy using the slide by slide guide.

Ed4Ed ~~Who are we, and what do we do?

First, thank you for being your child’s champion! Your community is indebted to you for your interest in keeping others aware in your community so that they too can destroy ignorance, saving and protecting young lives through education about little known (to adults) youth risk behaviors as they evolve and change (program currently covers "The Choking Game"; OTC & Med Abuse "Pharm Parties"; "EMO", normal youth counter-culture groups that can deviate & involve self harm; Atypical Inhalants). You are the most critical component in this grassroots intervention/prevention campaign. Ed4Ed is a unique virtual community organized to serve you, the injury prevention advocate with research and resources. The main communications hub is Ed4Ed at yahoo health groups: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ed4Ed.

Here you will join us in collaboration with educators (lay and professionals) here in the US, Canada & Europe, through many organizations [primarily linking with GASP http://www.gaspinfo.com/ for USA and Canada and via APEAS of Paris, France http://www.jeudufoulard.com/ - the hub that links us with 6 other countries] across the world.

Ed4Ed is a sub-set of this larger collaborative. Ed4Ed is set apart, in that is exists for one purpose alone – to support the advocate via communication in simple but effective networking. We pool our resources and share our experiences, improve our effectiveness.

I serve you as a moderator at the communication sites, contribute a curriculum I authored, Ed4Ed – Teaching The Essential Elements of Youth Risk Behavior to Today’s Youth, host and maintain the “cloud storage” where this program is available for all, and where I reserve room for you to create, upload and share your work with your co-associates here. You also have the option of sharing and distributing not only the Ed4Ed program, but also your unique works wherever and with whomever you wish (create internet links on your websites, Facebook pages, YouTube Accounts, educational forums, blogs, internet sites you access, etc.).
You are welcome and encouraged to join us and to invite others to join us, but access to the program is not contingent on membership or participation in support offered.
In addition to me all Ed4Ed Associates are supported by three other key administrators and can assist you there. They have administrative privileges identical to my own and serve to assist you in all capacities.

Lyndi Trost, Ed4Ed Network Director, A retired computer programmer, with years of experience in database and web design, handles all our computer tech matters here and in our “cloud storage” web site). Lyndi & I began this journey together in 2007. Lyndi’s Grandson’s Memorial web page is: http://braden-erickson.memory-of.com/About.aspx
• Ken Tork, Ed4Ed Outreach Coordinator, has been an Associate Member of our team since April of 2008. He is in a unique position to travel as he owns his own company and sets his own hours. He has offered to take the work out on the road. Like many of the advocates he chooses to speak publicly, presenting educational programs. In November he accepted the challenge of taking the Ed4Ed Program out to others, instructing users how to get the most out of the program and add it to their “war chest” of injury prevention education tools. Ken’s blog site is http://forkevinssake.wordpress.com/
• Leslie Block, RN CEN Ed4Ed Injury Prevention Specialist joined us in January of 2010. She will serve us with 20+ years of injury prevention work and expertise gained in her work as a certified Emergency Room Nurse for 20+ years too. She is the “go to gal” for medical questions, anatomy, physiology, etc. She is also our key liaison with medical professionals. Leslie is also the creator and author of another blog that is dedicated to the prevention of injuries in adults and children http://ernursescare.blogspot.com/ .
When you join us you (all members of this group) become an Ed4Ed Associate. We are all educators seeking to reach other educators, aligned to effect prevention/intervention of accidental injury and deaths due to asphyxial activities, and other emerging youth risk behaviors masquerading as “games”. [All risks currently covered are outlined in the Instruction Manual and the Presentation Binder in the links below]. It is a pleasure to reach out to you, shake your hand and express my appreciation that you have chosen to join us.

Access All Our Materials Via Our Cloud Storage : http://www.box.net/shared/ov7inpeqye (BOX.NET - See Link On Page).

Begin with the Interim User's Guide at http://www.box.net/shared/m4cu8ghqm and I suggest downloading the Adobe Acrobat Presentation format first http://www.box.net/shared/akts57aee1
With your membership (to Ed4Ed Yahoo Health Groups Support Network) you will automatically receive this guide. Should you wish to access the materials independent of the group’s support, please make this your first stop in your exploration of “cloud storage”. This will be the gateway to unlock the materials that are stored there for convenient, online access.

*Note, The Interim Guide is a “work in progress”. As the author of the curriculum, I am probably not the best person to write the instructional manual. It is difficult for me to see the program through a new user’s eye. (Ken, Lyndi and Leslie are taking point on this process and I invite you to help us with your reviews.) I have been working with the program for three years, familiarity that hinders an objective review for instruction purposes. As it evolves the notification of updates will be sent via the communications networks. *Note, ADOBE FILES [“.pdf” and “.sfw”] require current Adobe Software [Acrobat Reader and Adobe FLASH player]. If you do not yet have this free Adobe Software, download it from the Adobe Website, http://get.adobe.com//. (They also have great new user tutorials if you are not familiar with these formats.)

Many of the advocates you will meet here, including myself, Lyndi and Ken, are family members who have been personally and profoundly affected through the death or injury of their child or loved one to “The Choking Game”. We have become aware of other risk behaviors and now take on education about them too. Leslie has been deeply affected by countless youth she attends in the ER that fall prey to ignorance about a wide array of risks, which makes them victims requiring medical aid. Every Ed4Ed Associate here has been, in one way or another so deeply affected that they have sprung into intervention advocacy action at the grassroots level, motivated to bond together and push for change in a growing grassroots movement.

I am a full time volunteer advocate here to serve you. We exist solely to serve you! Please do not hesitate to contact us. Again on behalf of all Ed4Ed Associates, I welcome you to this network. Your presence is proof of your passion! I am quite fond of a quote with which I close this letter of introduction, stating eloquently the power of passion.

Les passions sont les seuls orateurs qui persuadent toujours. Elles sont comme un art de la nature dont les règles sont infaillibles; et l'homme le plus simple qui a de la passion persuade mieux que le plus éloquent qui n'en a point.

“The passions are the only advocates which always persuade. They are a natural art, the rules of which are infallible; and the simplest man with passion will be more persuasive than the most eloquent without.”
